On Our Bridge

A clock ticks in the corner of the classroom.

The teacher went to the bathroom.

We’re supposed to be reading about Will D. Campbell.

But I can’t help to look outside.

I hear shouting and see signs.

I see a man walking down our bridge— the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Then I notice the people walking down our bridge were people of color.

Then I looked at my classroom.

“Do you think…

they’re fighting for us?

” I thought.

For the rest of the day I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Until I saw the spider on the wall. I just stared at the spider.

It was weaving a web.

And when it was done—

The teacher was back.
